Causes of Eating Disorders and How to Address Them

Eating disorders are serious and complex mental health issues that affect millions of people. Despite their commonality, many people lack a full understanding of what causes them and how best to address them. At Avalon Hills Eating Disorder Specialists, we’ve seen firsthand how disordered eating can be both cause and effect of underlying issues, and we strive to develop innovative approaches to helping our clients get on the path to recovery. This blog post will discuss the different potential risk factors associated with eating disorders, as well as the strategies we use at Avalon Hills to help our clients address these challenges in order to create lasting change.

Risk Factors for Developing an Eating Disorder

There are many potential factors that can contribute to developing an eating disorder. Genetics, for instance, play a role in some cases; individuals who have a first-degree relative with anorexia nervosa, for example, may have up to 10 times the normal risk of developing anorexia themselves. Other psychological factors like low self-esteem or perfectionism can also be linked to disordered eating behaviors. Environmental factors such as living with someone who has an unhealthy relationship with food or overexposure to diet culture may also contribute. It’s important to note that there is no single “cause” of an eating disorder—all individual cases are unique—but by understanding the various possible root causes, we can begin addressing them in treatment.

Treatment Practices That Address Eating Disorders

At Avalon Hills, we believe in comprehensive treatment plans tailored specifically to each client’s needs. Our programs combine evidence-based methods like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) with experiential activities like art therapy and self-care practices in order to give clients the tools they need for long-term healing from disordered eating behaviors. We have also developed innovative techniques based on recent research surrounding neurotherapy which allows us to better understand the ways in which our client’s experiences interact with their relationship with food and body image — something that traditional treatments often overlook.

In addition to treatment methods specifically targeting disordered eating patterns, we also take a holistic approach that identifies any underlying issues that could be contributing toward a person’s struggle with food or body image so they can be appropriately addressed too; this could include looking at family dynamics or past traumas that might be affecting current behavior patterns related to food or body image. By taking both physical and emotional elements into consideration during treatment, we believe it gives our clients the best chance of achieving sustained recovery over time — something other treatments may fail at without addressing variables outside those directly associated with eating habits alone.
