Staff Spotlight: Meet the Team at Avalon Hills

At Avalon Hills, we believe in the power of connection and collaboration to create lasting change for our clients. The dedicated professionals on our team are here not just to provide clinical care but also to form meaningful relationships that support individuals on their journey to recovery. In this monthโ€™s Staff Spotlight, weโ€™re excited to introduce you to some of the team members who make Avalon Hills a special place. Meet our primary therapist, registered dietitian, and lead nurse.

Alyssa Richards, MSW, CSW – Primary Therapist

Alyssa Richards joined Avalon Hills as a primary therapist in November 2023, bringing with her a wealth of experience in mental health and addiction recovery. Before coming to Avalon, Alyssa worked in a mental health clinic in Cache Valley and a residential program for addiction. She also spent six years working with adults with intellectual disabilities, a role that she found incredibly rewarding.

Alyssa holds a BS in Psychology from Brigham Young University and a Masterโ€™s in Social Work from Utah State University. Her passion lies in addiction recovery, debunking the myths surrounding mental illness, and empowering young people to understand their intrinsic value.

Outside of her clinical work, Alyssa is an avid sports enthusiast and enjoys playing any seasonal sport with a #4 Turkey Tom in hand. Sheโ€™s thrilled to be part of the Avalon Hills team, where she can work within the Stages of Change model to help guide clients through their recovery process.

Christina Sperry, RDN – Registered Dietitian Nutritionist

Christina Sperry, a registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN) at Avalon Hills, has been with us since 2016. She graduated Summa Cum Laude from Utah State University with a BS in Nutrition and Food Science, specializing in Dietetics. With over two decades of experience as a dietitian, Christina has worked in various settings, including consulting and clinical roles, before finding her home at Avalon Hills.

Christinaโ€™s work with adolescents and adults at Avalon is centered around the philosophy of โ€œtreat to outcome,โ€ meaning she works with clients to develop individualized, sustainable recovery plans. She teaches Intuitive Eating, guiding clients toward healing their relationships with food. Christina finds it especially rewarding when clients, who might initially resist working with a dietitian, begin to experience renewed hope for a future free from the constraints of an eating disorder.

Outside of her role at Avalon, Christina is a proud wife and mother to four children. She enjoys outdoor activities like running and cycling, as well as spending time with her family. Her personal mantra of balance, variety, and moderation guides both her professional practice and her personal life.

Shalane Christensen, BS, LPN – Lead Nurse

Since joining Avalon Hills in 2014, Shalane Christensen has made a lasting impact as a nurse and, more recently, as our Lead Nurse. She brings a decade of diverse nursing experience to the role, including work in skilled nursing, acute care, doctorโ€™s offices, and home healthcare. Shalane stepped into the position of Lead Nurse in 2021, where she focuses on providing excellent care and fostering open, honest communication with clients, their families, and her coworkers.

Shalane is deeply passionate about the collaborative, team-oriented approach at Avalon Hills. She loves seeing clients make incredible progress from their initial admission to their successful graduation from the program. For Shalane, thereโ€™s nothing more rewarding than witnessing the transformation that comes with recovery.

When sheโ€™s not at Avalon, Shalane enjoys spending time with her dogs, attending live concerts, and exploring the great outdoors. Whether itโ€™s picking huckleberries in Idaho or visiting Yellowstone, Shalane makes sure to find time for the things that bring her joy.

At Avalon Hills, our team of dedicated professionals works together to provide a supportive, compassionate environment for those on the road to recovery. Whether itโ€™s through therapy, nutrition counseling, or medical support, our staff is committed to helping clients achieve lasting wellness. Weโ€™re proud of the incredible work our team does, and we hope that by getting to know them, you can see the heart and passion behind everything we do.
